Encouraging the Dreams of Tomorrow
The Youth Theatre Education Program is geared toward teaching children about the many aspects of the theatre. As part of the mission of South County Players, the Youth Theatre Education Program is dedicated to promoting leadership skills and literacy through the use of the dramatic arts. The program includes two different opportunities for children to learn about the theatre while exercising their teamwork, leadership and academic skills.
The first program is a three hour workshop geared toward teaching girl scouts about all realms of the theatre. South County Players provides three separate workshops for a total of roughly 120 girls throughout greater southwest Michigan. In each session, the girls have the opportunity to “act” on stage, use stage makeup, wear costumes, operate lighting and sound equipment, as well as build and paint pieces of scenery. At the end of the workshops the girls learn the importance of teamwork in the theatre. The exposure to both main stage performance and technical theatre allows each child to find an area where they excel, so they are more able to build their self-confidence which helps to develop their leadership skills.
The second project of the Theatre Education Program is a play that mirrors the Summer Reading Program theme supported by libraries throughout Michigan. The purpose of the play is to motivate children to expand on the books they read. The play allows children from all backgrounds to participate in a dramatic function which will help to increase their literacy skills as well as their love for reading. Each child that auditions is given a speaking part in the production, and the performance is free for all community members to attend.
